ESUSD Board Policy: Student Use of Emerging Technologies, including Generative Artificial Intelligence
During the 2023-24 school year, the El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) Board of Education, Superintendent, Leadership Team, and (AI)dvisory Team actively engaged in sensemaking around emerging technologies, including “generative artificial intelligence” (“GenAI”) in TK-12 education. A community engagement approach was utilized to gather meaningful feedback to inform future board policy that adequately reflects the need for more adaptive guidance amidst exponential and rapid technology advancement.
District staff, led by the Superintendent, worked directly with researchers and policy experts, including the Digital Promise AI Working Group and the EdSafe AI Policy Lab, to assess the acceptable use of emerging technologies, including GenAI, from various stakeholder lenses. Guidance documents from several organizations were studied, informing the development of policy, including those from EDSAFE AI Alliance
